Mobile internet users to double in 2009, days Novarra
Mobile firm Novarra says the number of people using the mobile internet rose by 61% in the first half of 2009, meaning it's on course to double by the end of this year. The claim is made in the company's latest Mobile Internet Experience Update, based on usage stats from the company's browser and platform deployments with operators around the world - one billion end users. The report also suggests that people are increasing their monthly data consumption, and that mobile video in particular is growing - with users who have access to streaming videos spending 80 minutes a month on average watching them. Also on the up is mobile Twitter usage. Novarra's stats show a 3,500% increase in pageviews for the mobile Twitter website in the first half of this year - and that doesn't include people using Twitter applications. Other sites showing strong growth according to the report include Flirtomatic (210%), Abphone (260%), Taptu (300%) and Wikipedia (112%). Oh, and Google, with a 129% rise in the first half of 2009. Social networking mobile sites increased their pageviews by 190% as a category, while display ad views increased by 52% during the period. "Mobile internet is becoming a mainstream activity," says Scott Cotter, senior director of marketing at Novarra. "The marked increase in users, data consumption and rich content demonstrates that consumers are rapidly transferring their web habits from the desktop to mobile."
